And as your home has probably just undergone a total facelift, you will undoubtedly see a vast improvement from before your siding renovation. But will it last? WIll your home still as great two or three years down the road? How your siding was installed will provide the answer!
All These Siding Issues Pictured Below Were Caused By An Improper Installation!
The Basics of Siding Installation
- Siding is constantly floating
- Improper sizing can cause permanent distortion
- Siding panels expand and contract in different weather conditions
- Nail placement and proximity can cause panels to warp, buckle and wave
To understand the basics of exterior wall siding installation you need to firstly understand that siding is constantly floating, and not nailed tightly to the wall. The changes in seasons, and even the temperature difference from a sunny day to chilly evening will cause the siding to expand and contract, therefore the siding is constantly moving on the wall. If you nail it too tight, or squeeze an improperly cut piece into an area such as around a window, it will buckle and wave in time. If the panels are nailed too tight and cannot move with the heat expansion from the sun, the siding will distort, and once distorted will always stay that way. You should be able to slide a properly installed siding panel back and forth along the wall about ¾ of an inch, and that is why siding has a nailing slot and not just a nailing hole, in order to allow for the panel to move with expansion and contraction caused by heat, cold, and effects of the sun.
Proper siding installation requires the siding nail to be anchored close to the wall but not nailed tight! If you improperly nail or fit a siding panel it will buckle, warp and wave! There should be a nail on every stud or at 16″ intervals.
